Making Life SOOOOOOOOOOO Much Easier Mar 07, 2005
By MAB I bought the UpEasy Lifting Cushion PLUS for my mom who has osteoarthritis in both knees and one of her shoulders. It was coming up on the one year anniversary of her second knee replacement, and she wasn't doing as well as she had hoped. One of her biggest problems was getting up out of chairs. The last time I saw her get out of a chair before we got the UpEasy it took her several minutes to get up, and she was in tears because of the pain.
It was then that I decided to do some research on the net to find a way to help her. I checked out some sites about full chairs and portable cushions that would lift people out of their seats. The full chairs were too expensive and would only help her in her house. The plug in models would have a cord on the floor (another hazard) and would lift 100% of the person's weight (not necessary because my mom would still want to rehabilitate her knees as much as possible). I decided that a cushion that didn't need electricity to work was the way to go.
I stumbled upon AllegroMedical.com and found its price to be cheaper than any other site I had visited (Amazon.com orders through AllegroMedical.com). I called to get information about the cushion and the customer service representative was extremely helpful and polite. If you order more than $100 worth of merchandise through AllegroMedical.com (or Amazon.com), you get free shipping. Check the site to see if there is anything else you might want to order. The shipping for the PLUS was less than $10.00. I ordered the cushion from the website on Wednesday afternoon and received it Friday afternoon!
I took the cushion over to my mom's and was amazed by the results. There is an instructional video that comes with the cushion which is worthwhile to watch. The cover is removeable and washable (directions are on the tape). When we set up the cushion and my mom sat down on it, she got up so easily the first time, I actually missed it!
There are a few things to consider when purchasing this cushion. The first is its 9 pound weight. If you are someone who is going to be taking the cushion with you to other places, you should know that if you have other strength issues, the cushion might be a little difficult to carry. Also, the setup of the person's weight for the cushion requires a little bit of strength. Likewise, the closing of the cushion requires a little bit of strength. This cushion lifts 80% of your weight, so if you need more help, consider the plugin models or a chair. The cushion can only be used in seats that don't have wheels and that have at least one armrest. The cushion can't be used in the car. Finally, please know that the cushion is NOT RETURNABLE unless there is a defect.
I have also recommended this cushion to a colleague whose husband has post polio syndrome, and he loves it, too! Another colleague who had a knee replaced has ordered one too after my colleague and I raved about it.
This is the only review I have ever written, but I felt this wonderful product deserved to be reviewed so that others would know how great it is!

Works, but not very comfortable Jun 01, 2008
By aprovide I bought this product for my mom. It did help her tremendously with sitting and standing. However, it was too uncomfortable for her to sit on so I ended up returning it. Also, it does not work well on sofas. It needs a very solid firm surface in order to work properly. If used on a soft sofa, it wobbles and tilts and could be a bit dangerous for her.

One of my patients is not able to get out of a chair without assistance. His wife now has problems with her shoulder and is not able to help him out of chairs. After telling me their situation, I ordered this product for them. They LOVE it. Jack is now able to get up and down without assistance and without any struggles. The only thing that he says could be considered a problem is that if he bends over to tie his shoes the lift assumes that he is trying to get up and "boosts" him out of the chair. He figures out that the way around that is to lift out of his chair, sit in his wheelchair and then bend over to tie his shoes. Jack's only complaint is that he didn't discover this product years ago!!

I purchased this for my mom, who is 80 and barely walks due to parkinsons and an old broken back. It is fine for boosting her out of the chair, and sitting more gently. It is not terribly comfortable to sit on, and I am nervous about it throwing her off balance. You have to sit on it very upright, which can be a problem.
